Witnessing The Courage To Break The Glass Ceiling

Featuring Amy B. Ferguson

HerNature asked Amy, “What woman inspired you to be the real you?”

I watched Melanie Zentgraf break the glass ceiling.

When I was in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University, women weren’t allowed to join the Corps’ most elite groups. Melanie knew it was wrong and sued the university on behalf of all of us.

I was so impressed with her courage. She took on the establishment. As a 19-year-old, I got to see a woman speak truth to power and ultimately triumph.

As a 19-year-old, I got to see a woman speak truth to power and ultimately triumph.

Melanie graduated in 1979 but pursued the case for six more years just to do what was right. Because of her, my classmates were the first women to join those elite organizations in 1985.

I’ve always wanted to be like her. This one woman’s courage meant I got to feel, personally, the benefit of democracy.
