HerNature asked Diane: “What woman has inspired you to be the real you?”
I’m grateful to have had Silvia L. Jackson Jones as my high school German language teacher and later as a traveling companion and friend. Frau Jones was Black and her openhearted investment in me as a blue-eyed, blond girl continues to shape my desires today for our beloved community.”
Born in the 1930s, Silvia grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and brought a unique perspective to our Los Angeles county school. Silvia believed people needed to experience the world, not just read books about it.
She called me during my freshman year of college and asked if I’d go backpacking in Europe with her family and a group of high school students.
She showed me the simple and joyful power of travel and building relationships. I miss her.
Sylvia persuaded me to spend my hard-earned savings with, “Traveling is an investment in yourself that lasts a lifetime.” I wish she were alive so we could talk about where America finds herself in 2021.
She showed me the simple and joyful power of travel and building relationships. I miss her.
